Placing in Context Infosec Skills Gap

NASCIO's Chad Grant Analyzes Challenges
Attracting and retaining IT security professionals may be the No. 1 staffing challenge states face, but the numbers alone unveiled in a recent National Association of State Chief Information Officers survey don't tell the whole story. The NASCIO survey published last month (see States Struggle to Find IT Security Personnel) of state IT officials shows that 52 percent of respondents identified security as the greatest challenge they face in attracting and retaining IT employees. It was the only skill to top 50 percent.

But security isn't the exclusive domain of the IT security practitioner, Chad Grant, a NASCIO policy analyst, says in an interview with GovInfoSecurity.com. "If you look at project management, architecture or some of these other issues, security is included in all of these elements," he says.

In the interview, Grant also discusses the:

  • Impact of baby-boomer retirement on the multigenerational state IT and IT security workforces.
  • Innovative ways states employ to attract IT security specialists.
  • Increasing demand by states to secure mobile technologies.

Grant, interviewed by GovInfoSecurity.com's Eric Chabrow, is a former legislative analyst for the House of Representatives. He studied American politics at Boston University.
