Accreditation for Vendors Serving HIEs

Technology Firms to be Assessed on Privacy, Security
Accreditation for Vendors Serving HIEs
The Electronic Healthcare Network Accreditation Commission, which already accredits health information exchanges, plans to also accredit certain technology vendors that serve HIEs.

The new accreditation program for vendors of clinical health information exchange technology, slated to begin next year, will verify that the companies meet standards for protecting the privacy and security of protected health information. It will also assess their technical performance, business processes and resource management.

The Outsourced Services Accreditation Program for Health Information Exchange Services is designed to enable firms to "discover ways to improve efficiency, increase stakeholder trust, elevate the quality of service and keep current with marketplace trends," according to a release from ENHAC's Executive Director, Lee Barrett.

The commission is seeking companies to begin beta testing of the accreditation program this fall. Draft criteria are available for review on the commission's website. The commission will accept comments on the criteria Sept. 26 through Nov. 26.
